Independent Living is an option for seniors that are able to live independently on their own or with limited assistance. Since independent living facilities are aimed at older adults who need little or no assistance with activities of daily living, most do not offer medical care or nursing staff. The difference between assisted living facilities and independent living facilities is the level of assistance needed for the residents.

Independent living residents are mentally and physically able to live on their own. Seniors that benefit from independent living are those that want less home upkeep, access to prepared meals, companionship and transportation.

Independent senior living communities most commonly offer apartment or cottage-style living arrangements. Independent living is best suited for seniors who do not require assistance with daily activities or need 24/7 skilled nursing but rather would benefit from companionship, social activities and senior-friendly surroundings while keeping their independence.

Many independent living facilities offer traditional dining services, housekeeping and laundry services, transportation to appointments and errands, social activities and fitness equipment and programs. The amenities vary from facility to facility, however, some also offer pools, spas, clubhouses and onsite hair salons.

Most independent living facilities do not provide health care or assistance with taking medications, bathing, eating and dressing. It’s best to understand the level of care need so you can find the best place for yourself or loved one.
